1) general relativity, which we now use for GPS navigation systems and more, is based on the calculation of absolute years before the same relativity devised by Bianchi, Ricci-Curbastro and Levi-Civita. Before the calculation of relativity was absolute pure research, no one knew it would be the key to Einstein's ideas.
2) RSA encryption, which is the basis of the Internet as we know it today, is based on mathematical theorems developed long before 1800. At that time, these theorems had no practical application, were pure research. Only now after a long time find their practical application.
